Tea land tourism with the international visitor market
Thai Nguyen has the advantage of being located at the gateway connecting Hanoi Capital with the Northeastern provinces, just over an hour's drive from Noi Bai International Airport to the provincial center. Along with unique tea cultural resources, a diverse tourism ecosystem, and destinations rich in identity, these are favorable conditions for Thai Nguyen tourism to expand its international visitor market, gradually improve service quality, and position its image as a destination on the regional tourism map.

Amidst the global tourism trend shifting strongly towards flexible, short-term, and experience-rich travel, Thai Nguyen has many conditions to become an attractive stop on the journey to explore the culture and nature of the Northeast and Northwest regions. The advantage of its geographical location and convenient connectivity with Hanoi and Noi Bai International Airport gives the province the opportunity to directly access international visitors right from the first gateway when tourists arrive in Vietnam.

Beyond convenient transportation, Thai Nguyen also converges many conditions for sustainable tourism development. Diverse natural landscapes, rich ecosystems, and unique cultural values of ethnic communities have created a tourism picture that is both familiar and distinct. This is an important factor in attracting the growing number of international visitors interested in "authentic" and identity-rich destinations.

In the trend of increasingly deep globalization and international integration, tourism is not only a comprehensive economic sector but also a "soft bridge" that helps promote the image of the nation and localities to the world. For Thai Nguyen, tourism development also means spreading the values of the tea land, a place where the essence of culture, history, and people converges.

Tourism linked with cultural industries is opening a new direction for the locality. Traditional values such as tea culture, craft villages, folk festivals, or performing arts of ethnic minorities are not only preserved but also "awakened" to become unique tourism products. This enhances the spiritual life of the community and creates more sustainable livelihoods for the people.

From an economic perspective, tourism contributes to promoting a positive structural shift, increasing the proportion of services, creating jobs, and raising incomes. In particular, the international visitor market, with its high spending and stringent service requirements, is considered a "lever" to improve the overall quality of the industry. Meeting the demands of international visitors also means that Thai Nguyen tourism enhances its competitiveness in the domestic market.

In recent years, Thai Nguyen tourism has begun to show clear signs of recovery, with the international visitor market recording remarkable growth after the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2023, the number of international visitors to tourist areas and attractions in the province has rapidly increased. In 2025, the province's tourist areas and destinations welcomed over 274,000 international visitors, a significant increase compared to 2023.

This result demonstrates the initial effectiveness of tourism promotion and advertising efforts after the pandemic, while also reflecting the increasingly clear appeal of tourism products linked to culture, ecology, and indigenous experiences. International visitors to Thai Nguyen primarily come from markets such as South Korea, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, Australia, and some Southeast Asian countries. Notably, over 85% of international visitors organize their own trips, while nearly 15% travel on tours; the average spending of international overnight guests reached over VND 2.4 million per visitor.

To gradually make tourism an important economic sector, contributing positively to the local budget, especially in light of new development requirements, Thai Nguyen Province has clearly defined the development of the international visitor market as a key, long-term strategic task; with the goal of welcoming at least 1 million international visitors by 2030.

To realize this goal, many solutions are being implemented in a coordinated manner. Tourism infrastructure is being invested in a modern direction, in line with international standards. Key tourist areas and attractions are being prioritized for development, linked with landscape and ecological environment conservation. Tourism products are continuously being improved in quality, associated with tea culture. At destinations, establishments and businesses are also constantly refreshing products to meet the demands of international tourists.

Tea culture is identified as a distinct highlight in attracting international visitors. In tea-growing areas, tourists can join locals in harvesting, roasting, and drying tea, learn about the processing methods, enjoy tea, participate in tea festivals, and listen to stories about people's lives, tea's life, and the art of tea appreciation. These experiences not only help tourists understand more about the Thai Nguyen tea brand but also create a friendly, intimate impression of the land and people of the tea region.

In the digital age, tourism promotion cannot solely rely on traditional methods. Thai Nguyen is gradually innovating tourism promotion towards a professional, modern approach, applying digital technology and multi-platform communication. Building the image of a safe, friendly, and identity-rich destination needs to be implemented in a coordinated manner, focusing on potential international visitor markets, while also involving businesses, the community, and digital media platforms.

Along with promoting and developing products, improving the quality of human resources is a key requirement for Thai Nguyen tourism to better access the international visitor market. The tourism workforce needs to be not only professionally competent but also proficient in foreign languages, knowledgeable about international cultures, skilled in professional service, and friendly in manner. Even residents in tourist areas and attractions need to be trained to become "cultural ambassadors" within their communities.

The international visitor market opens up significant opportunities but also places higher demands on Thai Nguyen tourism. To achieve the goal of welcoming at least 1 million international visitors by 2030, the province needs to continue enhancing product quality, developing infrastructure, professionalizing services, boosting digital promotion, and building distinctive, competitive products. Among these, tea culture, ecological tourism, community experiences, and historical-cultural values need to be connected into attractive itineraries that meet the needs of international tourists.

When every tourism professional understands they are a cultural ambassador, and every destination knows how to tell its unique story through quality products and professional services, tea land tourism will have more opportunities to reach the international market. From its gateway advantage, cultural identity, and innovation in promotion, Thai Nguyen has the foundation to gradually position itself as a friendly, experience-rich, and attractive destination in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous region.
