Thai Nguyen to coordinate implementation of Thai Nguyen - Yen Bai 500kV transmission line project
Thai Nguyen Province will coordinate with localities and the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) to carry out tasks related to the Thai Nguyen - Yen Bai 500kV transmission line project, an important undertaking for strengthening transmission capacity, ensuring the safety and stability of the power system, and supporting the region’s socioeconomic development.
Route alignment of the Thai Nguyen - Yen Bai 500kV transmission line project
Under Decision No. 2201/QD-UBND dated September 7, 2026 of the Tuyen Quang Provincial People’s Committee, the Thai Nguyen - Yen Bai 500kV transmission line project has received approval in principle, with EVNNPT also approved as the project investor. The project entails construction of a new double-circuit 500kV transmission line, approximately 94 km long, from Yen Bai 500kV Substation to Thai Nguyen 500kV Substation, as well as installation of bay equipment at Thai Nguyen 500kV Substation to ensure synchronization across the entire route.
The transmission line will pass through Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen provinces. Within Thai Nguyen, its endpoint will be the 500kV gantry tower of Thai Nguyen 500kV Substation, planned for Phuc Thuan Ward.
Route alignment through Thai Nguyen Province
As the locality where the transmission line connects to the 500kV substation system, Thai Nguyen has been requested to work closely with EVNNPT and relevant agencies and units during project implementation; review and incorporate the project into relevant plans; carry out procedures concerning land, forests, the environment, construction, and minerals; undertake site clearance; and perform other prescribed tasks.
The project has a preliminary total investment of more than VND 4.588 trillion and is expected to be completed and energized in the fourth quarter of 2027. Once completed, it will help transmit power from hydropower plants and integrate renewable energy from the Northwest region into the national power system, while strengthening interconnection, enhancing the safe and stable operation of the regional grid, and improving the reliability of power supply.
For Thai Nguyen, synchronized implementation of the project will help enhance energy infrastructure capacity and meet rising electricity demand as the province accelerates industrialization, attracts investment, develops large-scale industrial parks and clusters, promotes economic growth, and ensures energy security in the new period.
