Thai Nguyen: Developing a sustainable wood processing industry
With the advantage of its regional connectivity, an increasingly complete transport system, numerous industrial parks and clusters invested in a coordinated manner, and large forest areas, Thai Nguyen is gradually becoming an attractive destination for wood processing enterprises. The development of this industry not only helps raise the value of forest resources, create jobs, and increase incomes for residents, but also opens up a new direction for forestry economic development toward a green, modern, and sustainable model.Bac Kan Wood Cooperative (Duc Xuan Ward) purchasing wood from local residents In recent years, the wood processing industry in Thai Nguyen has effectively tapped into the locality’s potential and advantages, especially in mountainous areas with large production forest areas. In Cluster 15, Duc Xuan Ward, Bac Kan Wood Cooperative has invested in thousands of square meters of land to build workshops, install machinery, and set up material storage and veneer-drying yards. Each day, the facility provides regular jobs for 11 local workers, with an average income of VND 300,000-400,000 per person per day. Mr. Pham Van Tu, Director of Bac Kan Wood Cooperative, said: “The local raw material supply is quite abundant, and market demand is stable, so the Cooperative’s production activities are maintained steadily. What matters is that the local government is now implementing many support solutions to help wood processing facilities access capital, premises, and consumption linkages, thereby creating conditions for small facilities to develop more sustainably.” Wood processing operations at the Ke Go Bac Kan Co., Ltd. Branch Along with medium- and small-scale production facilities, Thai Nguyen has attracted many large-scale wood processing projects, gradually forming a modern forest product processing industry. Notable examples include the MDF Board Manufacturing Plant of Dongwha Vietnam Co., Ltd., with a capacity of 300,000 m³/year; Hoang Van Thu Paper Company, with a capacity of 100,000 tons/year; Lechenwood Vietnam Co., Ltd.; Govina Investment Joint Stock Company; the Hong Ngoc Production and Trading Co., Ltd. Branch; the Ke Go Bac Kan Co., Ltd. Branch; and Anh Binh Plywood Co., Ltd.… These enterprises mainly produce plywood, wood flooring, and furniture products for export. Ms. Nong Thi Kiem, a representative of Lechenwood Vietnam Co., Ltd., said: With an abundant supply of planted forest raw materials from the locality and neighboring areas, the company has boldly invested in modern production lines to manufacture wood products for export to the United States and many other countries. The Company currently provides jobs for about 300 local workers, with an average income of VND 6-15 million per person per month. Thai Nguyen Province currently has over 372,000 hectares of forest According to statistics, the whole province currently has over 372,000 hectares of forest, with an annual harvest output of over 305,000 m³ of timber. This is a favorable condition for developing the forest product processing industry in connection with a stable raw material area. The province has more than 800 enterprises, cooperatives, and business households operating in the field of timber harvesting and processing. Many products with high added value, such as plywood, wooden chopsticks, and disposable wood products, have entered export chains to markets such as the United States, the EU, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. The development of the wood processing industry has helped create jobs for thousands of rural workers, with an average income of VND 6-15 million per person per month, while also promoting economic restructuring in mountainous areas, raising the value of forestry production, and increasing local budget revenue. Despite the results achieved, the province’s wood processing industry still faces a number of difficulties that need to be addressed. Most processing facilities are small-scale and operate under a household model, so the implementation of accounting, invoicing, and documentation practices remains limited. Linkages among forest owners, primary processing facilities, and export processing enterprises are not yet close, and a closed, stable production chain has not yet been formed. In some localities, the harvesting of immature forests and small-scale, fragmented production still occur, affecting the quality of raw materials and the economic value of planted forests. Forestry infrastructure in many raw material areas is not yet coordinated, creating difficulties for the transport and sale of products. For the wood processing industry to develop sustainably and effectively, in the coming period Thai Nguyen Province will focus on supporting enterprises in forming joint ventures and partnerships with forest owners to establish stable raw material areas, and on promoting the application of science and technology, deep processing technology, and green technology to raise the added value of wood products. Along with that, the province will continue to raise awareness and encourage residents to shift from small-timber harvesting to developing large-timber forests, extending the forest business cycle to increase economic value; and will invest in forestry road systems, especially in concentrated production areas, to facilitate the harvesting and transport of raw materials. As new-generation free trade agreements are opening up major opportunities for Vietnam’s wood industry, Thai Nguyen has identified trade promotion and export market expansion as an important task. The province will step up support for enterprises in obtaining certificates of origin (C/O), promoting products, and connecting with markets in countries and regions such as the United States, the EU, Japan, South Korea, and China. With existing potential and a suitable development orientation, Thai Nguyen’s wood processing industry is gradually shifting from small-scale production to deep, modern, and sustainable processing. This is not only a direction to raise the economic value of forestry but also helps promote the green economy and circular economy, improve residents’ living standards, and effectively tap into the locality’s forest potential.
